Welcome

We’re glad you decided to visit our website: The Friends of the Gumstool Brook.

We are a group of local people interested in Cirencester’s Gumstool Brook and its associated streams – all connected to the River Churn in one way or another.

History and more detail

Founded in 2013 ‘The Friends of the Gumstool Brook and associated waterways’ was set up in response to deteriorating environmental and water conditions, especially with the growing phenomenon of a summer ‘drying up’ and occasional flooding of the Gumstool waterways.

The Gumstool Brook (Gumstool … sometimes spelt Gunstool … refers to a medieval ducking stool although there is no evidence that one was ever used) is a small balancing waterway between the Daglingworth Stream and the main River Churn. There are variations on exactly which section is called ‘The Gumstool Brook’ but, feeding from the River Churn at the Gloucester Street sluices and the Daglingworth Stream to the West, there are the associated Barton Millpond/pound, the Swimming Pool riverside walk, the Gumstool itself and the outflow of the Daglingworth Stream into the Abbey Grounds before eventually rejoining the main river.

The Gumstool Brook and associated waterways, with antecedents dating back to Roman times, were dug and created from the twelfth to the eighteenth centuries and fed from the River Churn and Daglingworth Stream. For a while at least two mills were powered on the complex and the Abbey (dissolved in 1539) also benefitted. From the eighteenth century they also fed the the Cirencester Branch of the Thames and Severn Canal until this was finally abandoned in 1941.

Over many years the condition of the waterways has deteriorated significantly and the ‘Friends’ have as their objectives, monitoring, renewal and restoration. As well as on-going monitoring the ‘Friends’ host two open meetings a year. These bring together statutory bodies, riparian owners, local interest and volunteer groups as well as members of the general public.
